Italy edged Uruguay in the third-place match of the FIFA
Confederations Cup in a penalty shoot-out. The match progressed to
extra-time after ninety minutes of actions withboth team squared at
two goals apiece.
Davide Astori opened scoring for Italy in the 24th minute with a left
footed shot from close range to the bottom right corner following a
set piece situation.
Edinson Cavani scored his second goal of the tournament to equalise
for Uruguay 13 minutes after the interval following a fine assistfrom
Walter Gargano. The Napoli of Italy striker placed a right footed shot
from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner.
Alexssandro Diamanti pulled the Azzuris ahead with a left-footed
free-kick in the 73rd minute before Cavani scored his brace with a
superbfree-kick magic from 20+ yards from goal, 12 minutes from full
time.
Uruguay's Diego Forlan, Martin Caceres and Walter Gargano failed to
convert from the spot kick, while Italy's Martin De Sciglio also
missed from the spot as the Europeans emerge a 2-3 winners by
penalties.
